What is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a naturally occurring silicon carbide crystal that was first discovered in a meteor crater. It has since also been naturally found in several other locations around the world, but is extremely rare. Today, most of the moissanite in the world is synthetically made.

The Properties of Moissanite

Moissanite is known for its diamond-like properties. The unique hardness of moissanite makes it a popular choice for use in jewelry, as it is resistant to scratching and chipping.

Moissanite also has a high refractive index which means it disperses light well and creates a brilliant, beautiful sparkle like diamonds.

The Benefits of Moissanite

The Benefits of Moissanite

One of the main benefits of moissanite is its affordability. Moissanite jewelry is typically more affordable than diamond jewelry, but still possesses the same appearance and sparkle.

Additionally, moissanite is also a more environmentally friendly choice as it is sustainably made in a lab and not mined from the earth.

Moissanite vs. Diamond

Most people find it hard to visually tell the difference between moissanite and diamond. The GIA has even mentioned that moissanite is very similar to diamond. However, when compared with diamonds, moissanites exhibit an extra level of brilliance and fire which diamonds don’t have.

It's almost impossible to tell moissanite and diamond apart for most jewelry pieces because the stones are small - and for that reason we choose moissanite for our jewelry. It is both stunning and practical.

Brilliance and Fire

Brilliance and Fire

What exactly is brilliance and fire? Brilliance is the flashes of white light you see reflected back at you from inside the stone. Fire is when white light turns into different colors as it passes through the stone, producing a rainbow effect.

Moissanite has a higher Refractive Index than diamond, which means it will bend light more and show higher levels of Brilliance and Fire.

Color and Clarity

Color and Clarity

When it comes to color, the difference in colorless moissanite and diamond is so small that it can only be seen by trained experts when they compare them side by side. Most people would not be able to see the difference.

When it comes to clarity, moissanites usually have less flaws as they are synthetically made. Diamonds that are naturally mined will often have some imperfections.

At Voll, we use colorless DEF and VVS1 graded moissanites in our jewelry to ensure the cleanest and brightest sparkle.
